The situation in Mayotte is another example of how vulnerable many isolated territories are to weather / climate risk. Risks compound well after a storm has "ended". While some commercial entities and automobiles have insurance, most homeowners do not. Just awful.

Of note: The USGS now makes available "aftershock forecasts," which is a pretty cool tool to show plausible expectations of future tremors of varying intensities.

This is by far the most insightful book I have read in probably forever. It's given me the perspective on disasters I've been missing for so long as it's the story no one (perdominantly the media) talks about.
Can definitely recommend if you're still looking for a xmas present!

One interesting fact that I just realized from checking my notes is that *all* major hurricanes underwent rapid intensification this season. The only exception is midgetOscar, that RI'd to Cat1 intensity.

I recognize my fortune in living in NL, outside the hurricane-prone region (for now, let's see what climate change brings us), but I resonate really well with delayed treatments negatively affecting my physical well-being. Now imagine if the cause of delay would be a significant hurricane impact...
I do have to say the paper has a pretty important recommendation: make "healthcare planning for chronically ill people" part of hurricane prepping, prior to the season's start. Discuss possible scenarios related to hurricane impacts and med. treatments with your healthcare provider.

The private sector is hiring scientists at an incredible rate. Even if you consider yourself a "traditional" academic, the ability to translate your research to a real-world application is enormously fulfilling. It shows that quality research matters and has actual impact.

(From a lecturer perspective 😉) Maybe something like SSTs, ocean heat content or anomalies of these? Particularly in the case of RI you'd (I guess often?) see a nice relationship between this and a sudden spike in intensification 😁
Please know that your past content is also still very useful! :) I use your intensity animation of Hurricane Lee (ofc with proper credit) in my lecture slides to show to students what rapid intensification looks like. It's a very illustrative animation, so thank you for that!!
