Similar in Oz. Psychologists focus on counselling, but can’t prescribe meds. Psychiatrists are MDs with additional training. Usually the Shrink needs to diagnose and prescribe meds. GPs can then manage those meds going forward. I’m lucky my GP has a focus on mental health, as his mum is bipolar

Pol with bipolar 2 don’t generally experience manic episodes. I get occasional bouts of hypomania, but more frequent bouts of depression. Took a long time for docs to recognise it

Bit of both I reckon. For some it could be a trigger. Others are self medicating.

I rake Quetiapene & fluoxetine but I don’t think the others are available in Oz

Story of my life. Ppl complain about money slipping through the fingers. Doubly so for us bipolars

Sorry you went through that, but glad you’re in a better place now. I don’t think you’re alone in the self hate. We’re constantly told we’re “less than” by others, so we eventually believe it. For myself I find it manifests as major imposter syndrome.

The scariest thing (so far) is the complete disregard for civilian safety. No exit plan. No transport. Just “catch an Israeli bus to Egypt & make your own arrangements”. The gall of it, after bitching about how Biden left Afghanistan.

G’day #BipolarSky fam. My second youngest (they/them) broke their ankle badly & is in hospital awaiting surgery. Their big sister made them a build-a-bear (i think it’s called). It looks like their roller-derby uniform - ironic since that’s how they broke it in the first place

She’s a moron. Apart from when the doc was trying to get the right dose in early days, I’ve never had to up my dose either. I had a bad experience about a decade ago when lithium went toxic n nearly killed me. Since then i’ve been on the same dose of Seroquel (quetiapine). 10 ys mostly stable.

No, not an agent. I just like to encourage people who are newly diagnosed and/or medicated. I’ve seen too many people give up in frustration when “it doesn’t work” after a few weeks. Because everyone is different, sometimes there’s a lot of frustrating trial & error involved. Sometimes months 💜

Stupid. Stupider. Stupidest. What kind of “doctor” thinks bipolar can be cured or treated without meds?

Hang in there. It might take a few weeks before the full effect of meds is felt. And your doctor may change the dose depending how you respond. But be patient; it’s worth it.
