4/ This logic also helps explain Trump’s fixation on Greenland. It is not just about resources, but geopolitics. While China’s interest in Greenland includes resources like rare earths, the deeper issue is control of strategic territory during periods of geopolitical tension.
3/ From a US perspective, intervention creates the possibility for American oil companies to return, invest & rebuild production capacity over time. This aligns with concerns about China’s expanding role in Latin America, particularly its investments in hydrocarbons & metals over the past 2 decades.
2/ Venezuela matters strategically because intervention sends
signals especially to China and Russia that the US intends to push back against their growing influence in Latin America.
In short term geopolitics matter in the medium to long term, it is about control of resources, especially oil.
Agreeing with Helen Thompson's review - at the heart of the Trump administration’s Venezuela policy is not ideology or economics but "politics" a belief that the US must retain primacy in the Western Hemisphere.

Another important dynamic is that the US turned over the remaining proceeds from an initial $500 million oil sale. Venezuelan officials underlined this will be used to “stabilize the economy, curb inflation, and pay workers.”
They also note oil exports have nearly doubled over the past month, rising from 498,000 barrels per day in December, when the United States began illegally seizing oil tankers, to around 800,000 barrels per day in January.
On the same day, the Trump administration eased some sanctions on the oil sector by issuing a license that allows U.S. companies to buy, sell, transport, and refine Venezuelan crude oil.
Further developments include new hydrocarbons law enacted last week which expands the role of private companies, lowers taxes, and allows for independent arbitration of disputes, a key demand of foreign investors.
The Nacala report notes Venezuelan lawmakers are reviewing a bill called “Amnesty for Democratic Coexistence,” which would drop common charges against critics (terrorism, treason). Covering from 1999 to today, the bill would also restore political rights to barred opposition figures like Machado.
