Y7 algebra and I love the way Mosaic maths leads us through identifying factors, linking back to the work on prime factor trees with now incorporating algebraic factors. Next lesson is then factorising expressions.

Why is GCSE maths only a single GCSE for students when the amount of content, and therefore teaching time, is the same as English and Science, where students get the equivalent of 2 GCSEs...
#MathsToday
Y7 looking at identifying like terms. We used Mosaic maths text books and they are really good for greater depth. A whole lesson on identifying like terms and all the misconceptions that could occur. Next lesson is then collecting like terms.
We're recruiting for our continuing growth at River Academy. Consistent behaviour routines, supportive staff, focus on excellent teaching and pedagogy. Growing school within Maiden Erlegh Trust with super opportunities for career development

This week Y7 have been looking at algebraic notation and substitution. Extension activity was to create their own 'difficult' substitution question. This is a student question!

Y7 algebra, forming expressions. 3 less than x. 3 subtract x. Not the same thing! Where you put in a comma can make a difference eg 3 less than x, squared means something different to 3 less than x squared.....
34 would have been better ๐
I like the ncetm checkpoint resources too. They really help with deeper thinking and can develop some great discussions.
Yes, it's our first year using mosaic. I'm really liking it.
#MathsToday Started algebra with Y7. Interesting responses to the diagnostic quiz question 4 x 17 + 5 x 17. I wasn't expecting students to not be confident with the answer of 9 x 17. Had quite a few thinking the answer could be 20 x 17 or 9 x 38, or even 20 x 38.
This one came from the teacher resources for Mosaic maths text books. You can also find goal free maths from goalfreeproblems.blogspot.com?m=1

Looking at goal free problems with y7. This was my favourite: What can you determine from this:
17424/121=144.

Y7 have started looking at WRM DecemBAR. In previous years, it's been BARvember (in November). We've focussed on Q3,4 and 5 and students can have bar modelling introduced to them if they have not tried it before. Getting them to explain their workings helps with oracy too.

Y7 looked at how a Venn Diagram could be used with our work on factors. From KS2 they could tell me they have seen two overlapping circles. Now they know we could have more than 2 circles and possibly even 4 that would look like the Audi logo depending on what intersections were needed.
#MathsToday
Y7 looked at tests of divisibility. If anyone knows a test of divisibility for 7, other than Jud doing a division calculation, please let me know.
In #MathsToday Y7 started with a goal free problem to discuss, followed by looking at explaining why an answer was incorrect and what it should be. Set 1 went straight to written explanations, set 3 we discussed each question as a class. Maths is learning these analysis and explanation skills too.

Y7 were continuing to work on place value, greater depth by working on conversions of Giga metres, nano metres etc
#MathsToday
Y7. How can we multiply by something and get a smaller answer? How can we divide by something and get a larger answer? What did we do last lesson! Decimals less than 1, negative powers of 10. Need to work on recall beyond only remembering yesterday, they've had a whole weekend to forget.
Please add me. I'm head of maths at a brand new school in Reading.

Half term, but a bit of maths history at the Ashmolean museum in Oxford
We have just started using the Mosaic maths text books and kerboodle resources with our year 7. Love the way they are really getting the greater depth for place value. #maths
The recent course delivered by me and Craig Barton is now available online!

I'm new to bluesky and wanted to be able to communicate with other maths education professionals. I have very recently been appointed as head of maths at a brand new school. I also have an interest in SEN and disadvantaged students. I love dogs, books, music and West End theatre.
