Pie chart showing that over 1 million jail bookings per year involve missed court dates. 488,000 are FTA with other charges. 546,000 are FTA charges only.
Of all the reasons people get sent to jail, forgetting an appointment has to be among the least justifiable.
Yet, each year, 1 million jail bookings involve people facing failure to appear (FTA) charges.
Shuffling people into the system for missing court does not keep us safeπ§΅
More caffeine is rarely the right answer, but it is always AN answer.

I really like how Zohran Mamdani has run a campaign that is so focused on making New York City a safe (including from the fascism of our current federal government) and affordable place for all its residents, and I am really appalled by how racist so much of the opposition to his candidacy has been.

While similar to post-conviction carceral citizenship, incipient carceral citizens uniquely experience uncertainty and constriction (or the narrowing of one's social and legal landscape), furthering marginalizing people charged with crimes.
π¨New article out in Punishment & Societyπ¨ We show how legally innocent people awaiting adjudication are translated into carceral citizens even before conviction. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
