FYI - I am not one of the authors, and I fully recognize the issues of taking key points out of context. I am grateful for Annie's fleshing out the point (though that quote was definitely not front and center).
In any case, I have seen a similar summary to the above in various media sources.
Majority of African citizens (i) have not heard of climate change and (ii) place main responsibility for climate action on own governments or ordinary citizens-not historical emitters.

The idea of planting trees to sequester carbon is so popular that it makes people feel more negative towards a range of other techniques for carbon removal. Such a bias could hamper development of a socially-robust portfolio of carbon removal options.

Yes, I remember it... this is not to say though that (re)planting of trees does not have a role, particularly when done properly, e.g. multi-species, endemic.
But it does seem to skew discussions with the public when it comes to CDR.
