Yesterday, the Government announced radical changes to the asylum system – changes that will divide communities & cause torture survivors to relive their trauma.
Refugee status can be a gateway to a new life. But now survivors have to live through the terror that they'll be sent back to torturers.
In denying refugees the safety they need to be part of our communities, this Government has shown it's grossly out of sync with the public.
These reforms will only leave refugees marginalised as they struggle to find homes, jobs & education.
We must reject this cynical politics of scapegoating.
Refugee families who have survived war and persecution will now face renewed uncertainty every 30 months. Refugees should be able to put down roots: settle into communities, learn English and find work.
Our analysis also shows this new workload will cost up to £725 million over the first 10 years.
The UK needs a fair and humane system, where people feel safe and have support and stability to recover and rebuild their lives.
This cruel and draconian change condemns people seeking safety, including survivors of war, torture and human trafficking to a life in limbo.
Safety shouldn’t come with an expiry date.

(5/5) Stats also show a record number of people showing signs of modern slavery declined referral to the NRM. Reasons include fear of authorities, lack of self-identification, confusion about the system, and immigration concerns, all of which are exacerbated by harmful government rhetoric.
(4/5) This striking difference raises many questions about the Competent Authority position within an Immigration Enforcement body and how this impacts decision-making. The creation of the IECA in 2021 was a regressive step, and we urge the Home Office to return to a single competent authority
(3/5) We are concerned that there remains a vast difference between the percentage of positive decisions issued by the Immigration Enforcement Competent Authority and the Single Competent Authority: 43% to 70% in 2025.
(2/5) However, with the number of reconsiderations of negative decisions increasing year on year, we must also remind the Home Office that speed should never be prioritised over quality decision-making. Survivors deserve a system that makes timely and correct decisions.
(1/5) It’s encouraging to see the reduction in the backlog over the decision-making process for identifying survivors of human trafficking and slavery. The slight improvement in positive decision-making is also welcome...
