2025’s game of the year

Woof, that game is a whole separate can of worms for me. There are things about it that I’m head-over-heels in love with and other things that make me wanna tear my god damn hair out.

Yeah I mean other turn based games have had similar mechanics (like Paper Mario) but not quite like e33. It feels like the main crux of the combat in this game, so much so that they give enemies bullshit attack timings and one-hit moves that need to be dodged or parried.

It definitely feels like a JRPG made for people who don’t play JRPGs. The parry and dodge mechanics especially highlight that. Can essentially ignore all the other mechanics and play it like a rhythm game.

I get why people like it and I don’t think it’s bad or anything but I find so many of the design choices to be frustrating and at odds with itself. I like JRPGs a lot and I just don’t feel like 33 is in the same tier as many of the greats.

Guys, I have a confession to make…

I think Expedition 33 is overrated 😬
