no need for textures - the mesh has "center" edges with their vertices colored in black (0), and the rest of the vertices colored in white (1). vertex colors get interpolated automatically so you have a "free" distance field, the shader dismisses any pixel if their color is more than x

1st iteration was relying too much on unity (deprecated?) (or not?) (who knows) graph system and it was a pain to recompile dialogues, keep separate editor copies etc
2nd iteration was awkwardly storing the dialogues in scenes
