Our university voted no confidence for the president, but the BOT won't fire him. They're hiring a consultant firm to manage the crisis. Imagine walking around campus everyday knowing that more than 80% of the people on campus don't believe in you. It's wild.

The goal is to create feedback seeking habits and to teach students to see feedback as positive and helpful. The only way to teach students how to seek out and value feedback is to give them feedback that makes this move.

I almost always use audio or video to provide feedback on drafts and brainstorming assignments. I always open audio/video comments w "let's chat about your ideas." You can completely transform learning experiences w a few simple feedback moves.

Use feedback as a tool to actually communicate with students. It will change how they understand feedback as a learning tool. I use feedback to 1) answer questions students ask abt the readings and then I 2) provide some more takeaways from the readings so the feedback is like a conversation.

Several grad students noted discussing ideas from class with friends and family and that it was eye opening to see both the resistance and the enlightenment to what they are learning. But they were surprised at how few people know about writing knowledge and how many people won't resist it.

Grad students had an epiphany last night in class when they realized that communicating to people in & out of academia about how writing & learning works in reality is a constant fight that never stops. No one told me that half of my job would be trying to convince people of a few basic concepts.

It would be cool if the people who actually do all the teaching in composition were able to share their stories and work as easily as the people who theorize and publish about the field but literally never teach comp.

College students, professors are making their own AI rules. They don't always agree
More than three years after ChatGPT debuted, AI has become a part of everyday life β and professors and students are still figuring out how or if they should use it.
It's just wild to me how AI profit potential means ZERO discussion of cheating and stealing. But regular old plagiarism still punishes students for messing up a quote and citation. These two ideologies exist side by side right now and it's blowing my mind.

My issue with a three year degree is that it doesn't really address why students don't finish in 4 years. It just cuts the curriculum. There are systemic issues and financial burdens that lead to extended graduation times that will still exist w a 3 year degree.

Outsourcing feedback on student writing to AI is absurd. You have to read student writing to understand how they think & write & to help them learn. A language pattern machine doesn't know how to identify learning. I know everything abt student learning from reading & assessing student work.

People aren't listening to this argument. It's significant. AI requires vetting, so it's a waste of time. It doubles the time needed to assess writing. Everyone has to check all the outputs for inaccuracies and made up sources. It's adding so much UNPAID labor to higher ed.

Writing is literally thinking. You can outsource that thinking to a machine if you want, but there's zero chance that outsourcing your thinking and writing will make you a better thinker or writer. ZERO.

It's also absurd that people use Turnitin to catch cheating but then allow students to use AI to write. Huh? Using AI is like using Turnitin's database of student papers to write an assignment. It's just taking someone else's intellectual property.

In some classrooms, teachers ask: Can AI teach students to write better?
Coaching from artificial intelligence chatbots, personalized and accessible at any time, is now shaping how some students write.
No. Teachers aren't asking if AI can improve how students write. This is getting absurd. A language pattern machine that plagiarizes does not think or help people write. Or learn how to write. You have to actually write to get better at writing.

It's pretty wild that students are expected to leave a composition course, an intro to academic writing, as experts in academic writing, but literally no student leaves an intro class as an expert. No one leaves intro to biology as a biologist. It's a bit more complicated than that.
