My husband and I went to Hawaii in 2008, and the flight from Barcelona cost around โ‚ฌ1,000 per person. The different types of accommodation (a private bungalow, a hotel and a bed and breakfast) cost us between $100 and $140 per night. With current prices, we wouldn't even have considered going.

To #NMR community. I have just learned of the death of Prof. (Emeritus) Jim Emsley of the Univ. of Southampton. This is very sad news.
He was among pionneers in anisotropic NMR (thermotropic LC).
Thanks to him, I learned a great deal during my postdoc studies (Oct 95-Oct 96).

Dynamic signature of activity-stability tradeoff in lactamase evolution | Nature Communications Our ability to understand protein evolution hinges on understanding how evolutionary landscapes are shaped at the fundamental protein level. Using TEM-1 ฮฒ-lactamase we show that molecular traits related to the statistical ensemble nature of protein structure contribute to broader substrate specificity, active site-scaffold communication, and the selection of stabilizing substitutions. During the evolution of cefotaxime resistance, the initial mutation reorganizes the active site, introducing a new function conformation. Secondary substitutions improve catalytic efficiency by redistributing the ensemble and restoring a significant population of the original conformation, rather than by stabilizing the new conformation. Stability defects associated with initial mutations are not evenly disseminated but are clustered at specific distal scaffold elements. I requested a major revision (in the analysis of the NMR data certain things were taken for granted that were not experimentally supported), and when I received the revised draft and didnโ€™t reply inmediately, I was told that my review was no longer needed.
