Highly emotional isn't the problem. He went through a character arch in de OT where, at the end, he still trusted the good in his father so much, he threw his lightsaber away with Vader and Palpatine in de room. He knew he would be killed, but trusted the light in Vader to prevail...
That's not the point. There was no plan with the whole sequel trilogy so Mark went in on the draft of TFA and when Rian Johnson came and threw everything overboard, Mark had no chance but comply. That's what actors do, they act. His characterization of Luke nevertheless stands imo.
You're entitled to your opinion, but I think I'll let Mark Hamill, who should know the character best, explain it for you. Luke always had hope, despite all the hardship the dark side threw at him.

Haha! I enjoyed the OT and PT so much, I got a Star Wars tattoo to signify the importance those movies had in shaping my morality and childhood. The ST was just a badly written insult to anyone who enjoyed the first six movies.

I'm not a US citizen, but I don't see any real progressives in the democrat party. Center right is the best they can muster. It's corporatism against oligarchy. Either way, the people are screwed. Revolution is the onky way, but with your military, ICE and police, it's not going to happen.
