Did you see the recent clip from Comin' In Hot about the Smolinski acquisition? It was hilarious... he talked about how it felt to be traded for future considerations (nothing) and LA even paid his salary for the remainder of the season 😂

Doesn't that kinda ignore how badly Ullmark played leading up to his leave of absence? In October he was .863, Nov. .887, Dec. .895... even with a better backup, he sank the team.
I suppose (to your point) that if OTT had a decent backup they may have been able to run with that guy for a bit.

I'm assuming Tkachuk has a slightly inflated value and Thomas has a slightly deflated value... Joseph is a negative asset (buried in the AHL) who Ottawa grabs as depth

I'd agree with that, Hellebuyck and the US D is making Canada try to force passes. But the US had that double doink (???) and a few loose pucks that rolled through the neutral zone.
It's been a great game, though. Canada is pushing.
I feel like it may have been powered partly by the Europeans who have become honourary Canadians for this game
Canada has had far more possession and o-zone time (by my eye), but the US has had more grade-A chances. Americans are playing well defensively, but Canada has them under siege.
