"The new Mamdani administration can right this legal wrong in innovative and effective ways... Imposing 'just cause' standards on employers in New York City would flip the at-will employment script." @sharblock.bsky.social in @nycpolicyforum.bsky.social

Excellent piece. As a de Blasio alum, I can only wish we’d had an accessible, public-facing forum like @nycpolicyforum.bsky.social that unpacks the inner workings of city governance.
Have loved reading the NYC Policy Forum since it launched because we don't often get deep insights from past and present public sector workers and friends of the same on how to make local governments work. Highly recommend if you're into that kind of thing.
If you haven't read this fantastic piece by @jwmason.bsky.social on the complexities & the path forward for making housing affordable in NYC co-published by @nycpolicyforum.bsky.social & @phenomenalworld.bsky.social
@phenomenalworld, really you should!!

Just in time for the great grocery debate of 2026, Errol Schweizer is on the substack today arguing why public grocery stores are but one piece of a larger set of policies necessary to make the right to good and affordable food in NYC a reality.

Don't miss @ngusdorf.bsky.social in conversation with Josh Wallack, who helped deliver Pre-K for All to New York--covering the de Blasio Pre-K experience, voucherization, universal provision, private providers, & the Hochul-Mamdani childcare announcement.

Deadline is February 1!!
Yes, this imo is the right frame for thinking about this. What’s at stake in the conflict between Trump and the Fed is not the value of central bank independence, but the value of independent agencies in general.
I’m on a great dissertation committee and the student is looking for early childhood educators to validate an instrument for a study on play-based pedagogy—fill it out if that’s you!
In our newest post, Professor Ava Ayers revisits Governor Eliot Spitzer’s failed push to allow undocumented New Yorkers to get driver’s licenses, illustrating the perils of turning a quiet administrative fix into a political spectacle.

It's a strange day to have published this EXCELLENT piece by Ava Ayers on how administrative fixes are sometimes more effective than political spectacle in protecting undocumented NYers. That said, it's no less urgent/relevant in light of today's tragedy

Next up is a post about surveillance pricing and surveillance pay, and how NYC can ban the spread data-driven coercion at the checkout counter and in our paycheck rather than waiting for likely watered-down federal & state legislation.

In our first post (and the first of a two-part series of mini-roundtables on transitions), we asked three veterans of previous NYC mayoral administrations to give us their takes on the immediate tasks and potential pitfalls of the transition to governing.

Big tech shouldn’t be able to weaponize your personal data to jack up consumer prices and low-ball worker pay for people who don’t have other options.
