In 2025, the Australian Nuclear Association surveyed its members, who are highly experienced nuclear professionals, to gauge expert opinion on nuclear energy deployment in Australia.

The results highlight that the main barriers are political and cultural, not technical or economic.

Water is a common concern when it comes to nuclear. Luckily, the reality is that there's no special thirst for water when it comes to reactors - the water is returned to where it came from.

Judging by the public conversation in Australia, the main argument is to ban a technology because it is assumed to be too expensive.

Is this the right way to approach energy policy?

Other countries are paying to increase the amount of nuclear capacity available to power clean, reliable grids. They're able to evaluate accurate cost assessments, since vendors can propose their technology.

Meanwhile, Australiaโ€™s experts are locked out, not by science, but by legislation.

โ€œIsnโ€™t nuclear too expensive?โ€

Not if we use standardised designs, repeat construction, and license pre-approved reactors just like other countries have done.

This isnโ€™t about nuclear being costly. Itโ€™s about how you manage the project.
