I sometimes hear people lamenting the fact there are no “proper” skating games or street racing games anymore, citing the fact that studios like Neversoft and Blackbox don’t exist anymore.
But I think it’s mainly because these subcultures are no longer in the mainstream cultural consciousness.
Which in turn have to thank Tony Hawk the person/skateboarding culture and The Fast in The Furious, respectively
I think the popularity of “urban sports” (skate boarding, street racing, basketball, etc.) was a big contributor to games looking like this.
So business as usual?
The word “AI” has become contaminated beyond recovery now. I try to talk about “procedural systems” instead. But that doesn’t always fit as a catch-all term when talking about AI for games.

One day I will be both on the cutting edge of popular culture AND feel inspired to make a funny title generator tool website that then inexplicably goes viral. But today is not that day.
It was a fun game. I just think the districts and crew system were a bit shallow and left a lot of potential on the table. But I can’t really be too harsh on them with them being on a yearly release schedule.
Except maybe Carbon. That game was merely okay.

If it wasn't for VideoGamer's YouTube channel (specifically a college classmate sharing the E3 dub videos) I probably wouldn't have gotten to know @mattlees.bsky.social and by extension @itsquinns.bsky.social and you, Chris. After all these years still among my favourite voices in games media.
Nothing lasts forever, it's just a shame that VideoGamer ended up becoming a gambling-fuelled LLM zombie of its former self instead of just closing down. This is somehow more insulting.

This very thing is a feature of the authoring module of the online learning platform that I work on professionally.
My strict definition is that a podcast is a series of media files (almost always audio files) in an RSS feed that podcast player apps can subscribe to. YouTube videos or even the Spotify feed is just an alternative podcast-like format, but not actually a podcast.
That's why I'm always grateful for papers where they include (pseudo-)code instead or in addition to math expressions like these.
