down the hierarchical order all the way to the end of the line after the one where Mazepa's name has been erased with the mention of "all the Orthodox Christians." then follows the invocation of the Holy Virgin and other saints who should help the printers in their enterprise.

the erasure may be spectacular, but the original context is fairly down-to-earth, i.e., the usual mention of the powers that be (both ecclesiastical and secular) in a prayer modeled, I think, on that said during the Liturgy. the list starts on the previous page with the czar himself and continues...

going places, telling stories. next week in #Cluj #Kolozsvár #Klausenburg, I'll talk about Old #Romanian paratexts (possibly the oldest such texts extant) in a 16th.-century liturgical manuscript from #Transylvania. #vernacularization; diachronic #sociolinguistics; #dialectology

The difference between a linguist and a normal person is that a normal person thinks that Chomsky should’ve stuck to linguistics and a linguist thinks he shouldn’t have done that either

I don't know whether it is the #1 Catherine O'Hara accomplishment but the fact that she invented a manner of speaking that no other person in human history has ever attempted for Schitts Creek and made it seem realistic that her character would talk that way felt like a comedy miracle to me

what intrigued me was the mixture of eastern and western items in his outfit. the one you've just posted is much more consistently traditional (bar the umbrella).

thank you! yes, it does, that's what made me curious about it. the outfit is somewhat strange, but I guess we should allow for a somewhat faulty memory 50 years later. :)

an effective way to signal distance (ranging from mildly ironical to intensely contemptuous). the effect is enhanced by the fact that both 'tu' and 'dumneata' select the same verbal form (2sg) while the unambiguously polite 'dumneavoastră' can only be used with 2pl.

with the middle item, 'dumneata' (<'domnia ta' "your [2sg] lordship"), serving, nowadays, more to express 'cold' politeness (i.e., the actual lack of it) than the highly formal 'dumneavoastră' (< 'domnia voastră' "your [2pl] lordship"). calling someone 'dumneata' after you had called them 'tu' is

in #Romanian, it can be reversed. I've done it a couple of times myself to signal intense displeasure and (once or twice) contempt. the switch is very effective given that standard Romanian has a three-way distinction: 'tu'/'dumneata'/'dumneavoastră,' i.e., informal/moderately formal/highly formal

INTERVIU.

I am glad I am not in #Romania today, so that I do not have to take part in the masquerade of the official day of mourning for Ion Iliescu, one of the most toxic politicians who ever ruled my country. he is finally gone, but the stench will linger.

I moved to Britain in 2005 when people were up in arms about ID cards like ones that exist in most European countries being an intolerable affront to liberty and now apparently they want a world where you have to scan your face to use the internet and your genitals to use the loo

nineteenth-century Romantic poets can always get away with anything. 😂 when I read that the first image that came into my mind was that of a swarm of boudoir creepy-crawlies.

"avalanșă de reclamații," I mean. "droaie de reclamații" would also work very well. both are quite vivid.

'roi' is still too concrete to work with anything abstract, I think, and its link with the deverbal 'a (o) roi,' which always takes an animate subject still very perceivable for that to work. I'd go for 'o avalanșă de plîngeri' instead. if you want something less neologistic, try 'o droaie de...'

successful neighbors. so, wherever people live better and know they do so because of the spectacular development brought about by Romania's EU membership, they are less likely to be swayed by rabid, primitive nationalist, xenophobic, homophobic, and anti-EU rhetoric.

majority were the historically least developed and poorest areas (Bistrița-Năsăud, Hunedoara, Caraș-Severin) and, somewhat surprisingly, Arad, whose major urban center seems to have (recently) lost the development competition with Timișoara (Timiș) and Oradea (Bihor), its more...

the Timiș county map I posted this morning reveals, just as the national map does, exactly where voters were mobilized by a discourse that focused on pro-European values; these are the urban areas that have experienced major growth since Romania joined the EU and the home of its growing (I hope)...

28.68% in the first round as opposed to the 37.99% of his far-right opponent. impressive mobilization of pro-European voters led to a significant increase in voter turnout, which nullified (with a vengeance!) any advantage his opponent might have had after the first round. just compare the maps 👇
