there are also a lot of tipping points that can make the situation much better. And we are seeing a lot of progress towards these, too.
So despite the bad news we're hearing and will undoubtedly continue to hear, remember that there is always hope and that it will always be worth to keep fighting.
The world in general is also edging ever closer towards peak emissions, with an increase of less than 1% this year.
And finally in 2025 we hit the required number of signatures to get the high sea treaty into action starting January 1st 2026.
They also surpassed coal as the main electric generation source and have accounted for all new energy demand in the first three quarters of the year (at least according to one analysis)
Most of this growth comes from China, who, according to @carbonbrief.org, have likely reached peak CO2 emissions
Yes, media coverage was dominated by the bad news, but this year, again, also saw a bunch of really good news.
Let's have a look at a few of the headlines you might've missed.
Renewable Energy sources got a record amount of funding at 1.1 trillion USD.
The Trump administration probably deserves their own yearly review of catastrophe, reverting on much of the progress made by the Biden administration.
So? Is it all lost?
Or is there still, despite everything, hope?
Day 25 of #ClimateAdvent
This year has been rough.
We got confirmation that 2024 was the first year on record with average temperatures of more than 1.5°C.
And it looks like this year isn't going to be much colder.
We hit the first tipping point with the now inevitable collapse of warm water corals

They also show that a lot of these are industry based solutions or something that needs political guidelines. You probably won't have the power to just substitute clinker in your cement. 😃
But they also have a feature now that Shows you how far along the way we already are and that looks promising
And despite this round only having one good solution, they do show you that real solutions exist, that there are in fact a lot of them and that they don't necessarily fall into the same "just turn down your thermostat, and switch to an EV" talking points.

I like project drawdown, because they have this listing of "does it actually work or is it just something a silicone valley start-up tries to sell you" and because they don't only look at climate impact but also at broader environmental and social impacts. And they look at costs
If producing clinker is bad, we can just try to avoid using clinker. It's not that simple, you have to check that the substitute is actually working in the cement, but we're doing pretty good already, and it's a cheap, easily scalable solution, that could save us up to 1Gt of CO2, which is awesome!
It's the minor problem, because it'll save us, at most. 0.2Gt of CO2. That's not really a big impact. It's a nice to have, and can get implemented easily, but the more pressing thing is the clinker substitution.
The major problem.
But we are also making good progress here
The minor one is that this also requires high temperatures in manufacturing, which means high energy use, which means (right now) fossil fuels being burned.
We can solve that one pretty easily. Just substitute this with a better, less carbon intense fuel.
The main problem is something called clinker, which is one of the key ingredients, that make the cement stick together.
Clinker has one major problem and one minor one.
The major one is that the production releases CO2 as part of the chemical reaction. So you can't really decarbonize that.

An actual solution. 🥳🥳
Cement is one of the key ingredients of the anthropocene, meaning we use this stuff *a lot* and it's extremely wide spread and definitely not naturally occuring, but something manmade.
It's also bad for the climate.
This makes them expensive, and very energy intensive. Building Warehouse for this also doesn't help with the overall climate impact.
Therefore this is one of the solutions marked "Not recommended".
There are overall no savings in carbon emission, they are extremely expensive and cannot be scaled.
