China, 2012.
Street photography is about presence quiet observation, no interruption.

Someone posted an old Slackware 2005 setup (KDE 3.3.2, kernel 2.4) and it instantly brought back memories.
Before systemd. Before Wayland.
Just KDE 3, Konsole, and Slackware doing exactly what you told it to do.
20 years later and the philosophy hasnβt changed.

Big update pushed for #BSSG - my Bash-based static site generator
This is a major pre-release update, not the official release yet, and I would really love some testing and feedback before cutting it.
Highlights:
New build mode: BUILD_MODE="ram" / --build-mode ram
This is a memory-first build [β¦]
Just switched to mtm (Micro Terminal Multiplexer) a suckless-style terminal multiplexer that does ONE thing: split panes. No sessions, no bloat, just ~1000 lines of clean C code.

Soft morning light filters through low mist over a frosted field at sunrise. Bare trees and distant power lines fade into the haze, while a small shed and fence sit quietly in the foreground, framed by dark leaves on the right. The scene feels still, cold, and gently waking.
Today has been a long day, one that started very early in a soft, cool mist.
At last I can relax a bit, enjoy dinner, and try to catch a little bit of that weekend feeling.

βIf I want vim Iβll type vim. When I type vi I want vi.β
β Bob Beck, 2006
over at $DAYJOB there was a brief scare about the recent notepad++ bug, with lots of whining about corp IT removing the package from laptops.
This of course had me hint at saner alternatives such as vi or emacs and derivatives, but no mention of vi is ever complete without this message from Bob [β¦]
Iβve just received a wonderful email. Iβm so excited!
More about this in the coming days.

Using dmenu as my main UI, not just dmenu_run.
Super+Space opens a small menu for apps + system actions.

I havenβt tested XLibre at all yet, so I canβt comment on Electron
For anyone curious, thereβs already a SlackBuild floating around:
github.com/ONykyf/X11Li...
Probably better as a βwait and seeβ thing. It still needs time, adoption, and clear technical wins before it makes sense to suggest it for -current.
Slackware isnβt about shortcuts.
Itβs about understanding the system, from boot to shell.
This video explains well why Slackware still matters.

Huge files donβt need better editors.
They need better workflows.
Shell for inspection, ed for known changes,
screen editors only when rewriting is needed.

thank I'm in :)
yes please lets try to use discord again :)
Yep π itβs even simpler, BSD-style:
bsddialog --theme blackwhite --msgbox "dark mode" 8 30
Blue is just the default 3d theme.
Tried bsddialog on my Slackware ThinkPad.
Built from gitlab.com/alfix/bsddia... and wired into my tty1 menu -- cleaner layout, better spacing, same TTY.
Feels like a real BSD installer, not just βdialog in a boxβ.

Nice to see Game of Trees Hub: Git hosting on OpenBSD + Game of Trees, funded via Open Collective.
Small, boring, security-first -- the good kind.

Finally got my hands on a ThinkPad X220 π
Time to start installing Slackware-current and have some fun.

This was around the time of my first #FreeBSD install. I was told it was a real OS by my coworker (at the time we were Admins for Solaris and AIX) a few months previous, this same coworker got me to install Gentoo. I stuck with #Slackware until a couple of years ago when I installed FreeBSD 14.2
