heartening thread here. there is real, meaningful work we can do to protect our communities, we can learn how to do it from each other, and we don't have to do it alone.

Three young men and their mother drawn in the flat style of Joe Cappa (Haha, You Clowns). One man is sitting at a desk facing the viewer. His mother stands behind his desk chair. On the left a young man in a grey hoodie has his arm around her and smirks at the viewer. On the right a young man stands politely, grinning at the viewer. The man sitting down has his hands clasped at his chin and looks at the viewer. All of them have blond hair and blue eyes, except for the man sitting down, whose eyes are red. Their mom did a heck of a job raising those boys.

this morning i ventured out early to relieve a stranger of his parsnips...very animal crossing
Iβve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesnβt make you dumb it just makes you nice
one of the coolest things about ChatGPT is how you can actually just never use it. you can fill your whole entire life with simply not once using it. it's incredible.
Somehow the piss filter is the unsung hero of sniffing out GenAI
Garbled GenAI image that shows paper (represented by a box and...a jar?) on the lower end of what is supposed to be a scale, while a plastic bag is being elevated on the higher end. There are typographic issues everywhere, and the image has the nasty pee-yellow sheen that GenAI images tend to have.
sorry to subject your eyeballs to the slop. This is the (one of many) genAI posts that ground my gears. whatever is "gained" by having this visual to help "communicate" pales in comparison to what is lost in energy and water usage. Stop this.
every time I see a "sustainability" person use a genAI image on LinkedIn, i lose yet another precious braincell
highly recommend listing some general gift categories (snacks, wellness, clothes etc) with space for people to write in their preferred brands, flavors, sizes etc...takes a lot of guesswork out and saves a lot of disappointment
my holiday hot take: have a christmas gift survey. I had no idea what to get my in-laws, and they were happy to list some things they would actually use on a survey. this also saves me from making homemade gifts no one wants.

A crochet bandana in the colors of the trans pride flag, in stripes of light blue, pink, white, pink, and light blue. The stripes are in granny clusters surrounded by a border of the same colors, with ties in white
A tan poodle wearing the trans pride bandana, facing away from the camera. He is in a warmly yet dimly lit room, sitting on a pillow, while disco ball reflections dance around him.

a Drawn to Engineering comic for Chemical Engineering Education Worst-Case Scenario written by Luke Landherr drawn by Maki Naro Panel 1 STUDENT working on a computer. Smoke in the background. STUDENT: β¦ actually, if I just enter in the right prompts, I can get this AI tool to solve all this work for me! STUDENT: And thatβs before I even get into any writing assignmentsβ¦ STUDENT: The professor will probably want more accurate answers, after all. Panel 2: PROFESSOR working on a computer. Smoke rising from fire in a green hilled background. PROFESSOR: So thereβs all these problems to write and this student work to review, butβ¦ PROFESSOR: β¦ actually, I could just feed this AI tool the right prompts and have it do the curriculum design and evaluations for me! PROFESSOR: The students will probably appreciate unique problems and faster feedback, after all.
STUDENT at left, PROFESSOR at right. Circular arrows reflecting that the computers are doing all the work between them with no human involvement, surrounding a data center with smokestacks. Panel Two: STUDENT and PROFESSOR shaking hands with environmental consumption being revealed. TEXTBOX: This is the worstcase scenario for AI in education. STUDENT: Thank you for a great semester. PROFESSOR: Thank you for a great semester. TEXTBOX: All the learning and teaching self-contained within the AI tools, with no real human involvement. Panel Three Different PROFESSOR and STUDENT talking together, a back and forth to help showcase the continued learning and teaching together. Brighter colors. TEXTBOX: Letβs be clear, there are real possibilities for AI tools in both teaching and learning. AI tools can be great at helping develop codes for complex mathematical solutions, and can also allow for an all-hours tutoring tool for additional student support. And as an educational community, we need to consider what the best potential of these tools are, for all involved parties. TEXTBOX: But it is a potential slippery slope in rationalizing what is acceptable from all involved. And that is before we consider the devastatingly huge environmental cost in using AI, a somewhat ironic factor when we work to increase instruction in sustainability at the same time. TEXTBOX: So letβs work together in figuring out best approaches using AI. And letβs be careful to find the best limits at the same time.
Here is a comic on the use of AI in education that @makinaro.com and I made for Chemical Engineering Education. Maki's art is otherworldly in this one, and I'm very pleased to have gotten this published in the journal.

A large TV shows a channel in Poland. OP does not understand Polish so cannot translate the ticker tape, but the scene shows a woman working at a food service place and scooping food from a metal tray into a plastic container. In the lower left corner is a woman superimposed onto the image who is supposed to be giving sign language interpretations of what is happening. However, she is blocked by an advertisement for what appears to be tires that appeared in her exact position. Her hands are covered and only her face is visible.
im in poland rn and one channel has a sign language interpreter in the lower corner that uhh unfortunately also gets covered by ads sometimes
real #accessible, folks
Portland, OR TriMet map with the colored metro lines replaced with dragons. They are adorned with details specific to Portland, such as the yellow line dragon having antlers from an iconic sign and a trident tail, similar to the Portlandia trident. Several dragons have horns that resemble bicycle handlebars or local bridges.
