We will work with him in his pledge to fight antisemitism and share his conviction that “no one should experience violence because of their race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.” The ADL’s racist and Islamophobic attacks on our mayor-elect undermine our shared commitment to confronting both antisemitism and Islamophobia in New York City.
We congratulate mayor-elect Zohran K. Mamdani on his election and applaud his vision for “a New York City that is free from hate violence.” Regardless of how we or members of our institutions voted in the race, or how our views of Israel and Palestine align with or differ from his, we stand firmly against the Islamophobic and racist attacks from the institutions claiming to represent our communities.

Israel has decided to deport two Jewish American women for attempting this act of nonviolent co-resistance – these two women are teachers of righteousness. For Israel to deport them is an avera, an unholy transgression. We encourage all to join us in naming it as such.
That is why internationals come to help with the olive harvest – in hopes their presence will deter violence from the Israeli settlers and military. Yesterday, a group of activists from the program Achvat Amim (Solidarity of Nations) were detained for trying to support Palestinian farmers in harvesting the fruits of their trees that would become life-sustaining income for their families. This kind of solidarity is holy work; these activists are constructing the building blocks of a shared, stable future.
The olive harvest is underway in the West Bank. For Palestinian farmers, this harvest is a family tradition dating back generations: the methods for how to collect the olives, how to process them into oil, and how to build community while doing it. Again this year the olive harvest is taking place under violent conditions. Israeli settlers burn or cut down dozens of olive trees, some hundreds of years old. The Israeli military protects settlers as they attack Palestinians when they attempt to harvest their own crops. Some Palestinian farmers are simply unable to harvest at all due to this violence that the Israeli government allows and abets.

We await the world that the Talmudic blessing refers to: The world to come, when all people will enjoy a world with no war, no starvation, no illness; when swords are beaten into ploughshares, and the nations of the world will study war no more. It is on us to work for and realize that world.
As Israeli and Palestinian captives are released, we witness reunions that feel like resurrection. Every life returned is a blessing. And we remember those who will not return.
The Talmud teaches: “One who sees their friend after twelve months says, Blessed are You… Who revives the dead.”
