The Nazis stopped Jewish doctors from practising, so thousands of them left the country (my great grandfather was one of them). So many left that this was a good natural experiment for estimating the causal effect of losing doctors on infant mortality (& thousands died)

What is child stunting — and how has it changed over the last 200 years?
Stunting means being too short for one’s age due to chronic undernutrition and disease in early life.
It’s one of the clearest markers of cumulative deprivation in childhood.

Why are there so many of us still posting on X? I get the network effect argument, but what about the ethics of supporting a platform run by a supremacist/fascist? Seeing so many people and institutions remain there is demoralizing ...

Show Me the Data: New Practices for Historical Sources
@kmcdono.bsky.social @danielwilson.bsky.social and I have a new OA article out: eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com?url=https%3A... It’s about the fragmented landscape of historical data, and what we can do about it to improve discoverability, sustainability and reuse.

My two favorite figures from yesterday courtesy of @fjbeltrantapia.bsky.social: the growth of Norwegian names during rising nationalism in the 19th century, and the spike in «Håkon» and «Olav» after the accession of King Håkon VII in 1905

If NATO cannot deter the US from invading the Kingdom of Denmark then do we think it will be able to deter Putin from invading the Baltic?
If the answer is no then NATO (and the EU) simply has to deter the US from invading the territory of one of its member states.

Muy interesante. La tasas de mortalidad infantil entre 1940-1960 deben ser revisadas al alza (mucho), con importantes consecuencias sobre lo que creíamos que sabíamos para este período.

The Nordic countries combine prosperity with equality by realizing (1) substantial public investment in essential services, (2) influential labour unions, (3) high public expenditure on social insurance, and (4) high and progressive taxation.

For Women in Economics, the Hostility Is Out in the Open (Published 2021)
1/ Egalitarianism should begin at home. I link to this article by @bencasselman.bsky.social in light of the communications between Larry Summers and Jeffrey Epstein that have just been released. The released emails and the fact of friendship are vile.
