I want the high schoolers to have some images and aesthetic values in their head before they read about Lizzie seeing Pemberly for the first time.

I want to chase the most interesting parts of Jane Austen (for me) for this high school Austen reading group.

So I think I might finally tackle some of Gilpin's aesthetic theory of the picturesque and study some representative landscape paintings.

I want to compose three or four settings of the same Psalm, each of them engaging and illuminating a different aspect of the Psalm.

Does anyone know if William Cavanaugh has written anything anywhere since Torture and Eucharist where he amends or updates his positions? A sort of midlife reappraisal of the project of his youth?

I have not read any Cavanaugh since reading Radner's takedown of his project in A Brutal Unity shortly after that book came out in 2012. So much has happened since then!

First thing I forgot about Cavanaugh's Torture and Eucharist: It's the published version of his dissertation written under Hauerwas. So, yes, it's Catholic, but it's also postliberal straight from the source

I have obtained a copy of Cavanaugh's Torture and Eucharist, and I will now be tweeting about it in between the tweets about rereading Jane Austen. Sorry it's gonna be a very jarring mix

Is she a tasteless fool, lacking all discretion? Yes. Does she try to manipulate those around her? Yes. Does she act terribly toward her own children at times? Yes. Are her broader beliefs and values seemingly correct? Also yes.

I'm noticing this time reading Pride & Prejudice that Mrs. Bennet is actually right a lot of the time?

โžก๏ธShe's right to criticize Darcy for looking down on country folk
โžก๏ธShe's right to complain that the system of entailment is wrong
โžก๏ธShe correctly announces the plot of the novel

Iโ€™m rereading them to prepare for the convo and I have THOUGHTS.

BUT: What are some things that you love or hate about the Canons of Dort? Most important things to point out either positively or negatively?

A friend who is not coming from the Reformed tradition wants to talk about the Canons of Dort over beers, which, it must be said, is an embarrassingly cliche Reformed thing for me to do

Before anyone can reply, another friend walks in and I beckon her over, shouting, โ€œTheyโ€™ve got a like new copy of Emily Wilsonโ€™s new translation of the Iliad! You gotta get it!โ€ The librarian looks at me, amused

I walk into a local library and there in the used book sale pile is a like new copy of Emily Wilsonโ€™s new translation of the Iliad, for 50ยข!? I start texting friends manically asking if anyone wants it.

I had forgotten how much time people spend in Pride and Prejudice sitting around talking about books and personal libraries (you know i love this)

We'll see if my heavily-Wendell-Berry-influenced interpretation of Pride and Prejudice from the last time I read it over a decade ago still holds up

Every time I think about this sculpture, I think about the fact that J. G. Hamann was not included in this pile of Best German Books Ever and it sort of invalidates the whole sculpture for me

The question, then, is where exactly does the word sit for Austen? Does she use the word in its fully hollowed out husk form, โ€œfashionableโ€ as mere artifice and trend? Why then is the value of โ€œfashionโ€ and being โ€œfashionableโ€ important for Darcy, the weightiest character in the novel?
