Last Thursday, we held our second session of the Advancing Justice track in our educational series, EmpowerEd, on the Police Decertification Act – SB 2.

In both San Diego and Imperial counties, more than 40 participants learned about how to hold California law enforcement officers accountable.

Congress plays an important role in fighting for or against our civil liberties.

That’s why it’s essential to be aware of their recent votes on legislation that affects our fundamental freedoms.

We won't sit on the sidelines while politicians attack our freedom to vote and the Trump administration comes after voter lists and other private data.

The First Amendment protects your right to record government officials performing their duties in public.

This applies to ICE agents, police, FBI, National Guard troops and any other government officials.

President Trump and his allies are using similar tactics that confederate sympathizers used to censor textbooks and influence the way history is taught. We’re in court fighting these efforts.

Congress must continue to exercise its oversight authority and demand access to detention facilities, as well as fight for real accountability, and ensure our taxpayer dollars don’t continue fueling this abusive detention system.

This event was also to bring awareness to the Imperial Valley community of the realities behind the gates of the IRDF.  Abuse, pervasive medical neglect and an utter disregard for the dignity of people in its custody is all too often present in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention.
