Excellent piece on the great Dave Ball.
His passing has made me remember how many hours I’ve spent listening to Soft Cell over the years as well as what I loved about synthesizers and their evocative nature when approached with love and a wild imagination. Thank you, Dave Ball.
The way his synths seemed to almost wheeze to life, burst with a decadent grandeur or careen around jagged drum programs influenced how I programmed my own machines when I was regularly making music. I held - and hold -his style as a hallmark of electronic music production.
Dave Ball’s passing is sad and bittersweet for me. Of all the 80’s UK synth geniuses Ball was, for me, the one who really touched me with the way he programmed his machines and constructed his arrangements. I was happy to be able to tell him this on FB some years ago.
