worth remembering, David Lynch directed “fix your hearts or die” specifically at transphobes. it wasn’t a generic “no mean people allowed” statement, it was said by his Twin Peaks character in defense of a trans woman he cared for and deeply respected.

Glad people are settling on the term "pervert glasses". Bonus points if you also say it while posting a picture of Mark Zuckerberg or call them Mark Zuckerberg's pervert glasses.

To be fair, this article's four years old. I remember this happening now, and nothing came of it. About par for the course for Washington.

If you were OK with “Substack, the Nazi Bar,” maybe “Substack, a front for the gambling on life and death casino” might convince you.

Meme: The Duolingo owl and the Hooters owl are brothers. One chose the path of knowledge. The other, the path of jumbo bazoingas, short shorts and chicken wings. An unbridgeable schism. A tale as old as time.
The response: Their father, the Tootsie Roll Own, is equally proud of both and just wishes he could have his family back.

The Raincoats - Odyshape (1981)
An excellent album to end the month on, a dissonant, deconstructed post-punk affair that’s more like abstracted art-rock—with exotic instrumentation, off-kilter melodies, & a free-jazzy ethos. Kurt Cobain was apparently a huge fan. For fans of weird, good stuff!

The cover of "Petal Rock Black" by Willow. At least four pairs of hands and arms join in a web of solidarity, mostly obscuring the face of someone (presumably Willow). All the arms are from people of color.

What better way 2 wrap up than 2 explore the beginning, middle, & present of one artist? A 26 minute collection of sketches; not a statement, but a vibe. Feels laced w joy in the creative process. If there's a statement, it's that: making shit is fun.

The cover of Danny Brown's "Atrocity Exhibition". Bold white capitalized text says the artist's name vertically on the left and right, and album title on top and bottom horizontally. The title is repeated three times, like there's a glitch or a problem with the vertical hold. This black border surrounds a picture of Danny Brown where he's wearing a leather jacket and a t-shirt, standing against a wall. Everything is warped with chromatic aberration and distortion, like you're watching scrambled porn. Through the distortion, Danny's skull is partially visible through his face, as his eyeball.

A nightmare trip thru funhouse mirrors, knowing that ur addicted 2 coke and you'll have 2 survive doing rails off every surface in there 2b able 2 think get out. But also there's great bars & beats that fit the atmosphere, so holy shit what a trip.

The cover of Category 7's self-titled album. A water spout is wreaking havoc on a city while waves churn under a bridge that is being heavily damaged.

26. Category 7 (2024)
Liked it, but wanted to love it. Much better live. The songs are good, but they never find another gear, up or down, and it gets repetitive. Also, the album is mastered way too hot; we're talking near-Death Magnetic levels here. But Jon Bush still fucking HAS it.

The cover of Three Man Army's "A Third Of A Lifetime". There is a pair of hands cocking a handgun (the barrel of which is off frame to the left), but instead of a hammer, there is the headstock of a Fender guitar.
#MWE
25. Three Man Army "A Third Of A Lifetime" (1971)
A bit dated, but the songs are good. At the time, this would've probably beat ass. What makes this album worth listening to is the subtle twist & turns of harmony or guitar lines that go off the beaten path.

The cover of Arctic Monkeys's "Humbug". It's a photo of the band with the color washed out with more of a red-ish tint. Two of them are sitting against a wall. One of them is against an opposite wall with a pensive look on his face, and the other is wearing a white hoodie and laughing, standing between the two sitting.

24. Arctic Monkeys "Humbug" (2009)
A little more understated than their first two, but the songs are still good and they've still got the swagger.

Anyway, the big hit "Rain Sounds for Sleeping Pt. 6" comes from a very long and probably overstuffed album, "10 Hours of Continuous Rain Sounds for Sleeping." (Learn to edit, guys!) Don't know why Pt. 6 is the one that blew up, probably a TikTok thing

The cover of Franz Ferdinand's debut album. It has the band name in white lettering on a black background with a yellow bar in between them. The lettering is at an angle. It has a black background.

23. Franz Ferdinand (2004)
Aside from track 2 being utter dogshit (seriously, who heard the finished product and signed off on it), this is a pretty good indie rock record. It's uptempo (which is how I like this sort of thing), it has hooks, what's not to like?

The cover of Hawkwind's self-titled 1970 album. Lizard, snake things with arms and shoulders but dozen-foot long reptile bodies emerge from hives made out of leaves in a desert. Some of the leaves blow up toward the top and form the name of the band.

22. Hawkwind (1970)
Billy Joel once quipped that his band Atilla (also from 1970) was "psychedelic bullshit". I think I feel the same way about Hawkwind as a whole. This was not for me.

The cover of Caroline Polachek's "Pang". Caroline is climbing a rope ladder against a cloudy, churning sky with a slight streak of blue sky in the upper quarter. She is wearing a pseudo-Lara Croft outfit (except with long leather pants instead of shorts).

21. Caroline Polachek "Pang" (2019)
The building blocks for her next album are there, but there's only 3 songs I vibe w. The rest are kind of formless soup with great production and phenomenal vocals (seriously, how does she DO that?!?), but don't really become songs ever. Or ideas.

20. Clipping. "Visions Of Bodies Being Burned" (2020)
Weakest Clipping album I've ever heard (and I've heard 'em all). Lots of beats that aren't beats; they've done industrial well, its kinda their thing, but this just has no sauce. There Existed An Addiction To Blood (2019) was far better.

The cover of Missy Elliot's "Da Real World". Missy Elliot holds something that looks suspiciously like a smart phone (which would be wild since this came out in 1999). She stands belly up to a black reflective surface, wearing a collared shirt and leather tie over a leather outfit of some sort. The sky is roiling black clouds behind her with a lightning strike happening.

19. Missy Elliot "Da Real World" (1999)
What a dud. When you attempt to sound futuristic some of it's gonna be dated 27 yrs later but at least Supa Dupa Fly had songs to back it up; all this has is aesthetic; no substance. Tracks 3-6 are fine, the rest are not worth revisiting.

The cover of Joni Mitchell's "Court And Spark". It's a manila colored background. The artist name is bottom center, one third of the way up in cursive. The title is one quarter of the way down from the top, also centered, also in cursive. They both are written in see-through coloration, and have lines connecting them to form a box around a small, square-shaped picture in the center. I'm not entirely sure what it is, but it may be an abstract representation of Ms. Mitchell standing in front of some mountains. Something on her back (or front?) looks like a faint blue cape with gray dots on it. The nature scene in the back goes from yellow corn to green trees, to blue mountains to taller gray mountains. There is a cloud painted on top with a sponge. Joni Mitchell painted this herself.
#MWE
18. Joni Mitchell "Court And Spark" (1974)
The beginning of her jazzy period. "Help Me" and "Down To You" especially rule. There's some top notch orchestration adding to the jazz rock foreground, filling out this technicolor trek.
