Did you know that in the 19th century, people had to pay to receive mail instead of paying to send it? π¬

Photo of the Head Schoolhouse: it used to be a one classroom school for kids of all ages. Today it is the main building of our museum with archives, offices, and the gift shop.

The interior of Purdy's Store in Port Perry from 1910, which sold produce and grocery goods. The selection of groceries was a lot less than what we have now.
E. H. Purdy, behind counter, is serving Joseph Raines and his dog, Sandy.

Does this artifact look familiar - maybe from a popular kidβs movie? π₯Ά
This tool was used to pick up larger pieces of ice cut from frozen lake water. They can be seen at the beginning of the movie Frozen. We love when a movie can relate to the history at our museum!

Let's look back on the Ontario Carriage Works on Perry St. Before cars, this was the mechanics shop! Horse drawn carriages and buggies were the norm for travelling in the late 1800s.
This building was originally constructed in 1884, and is now the home of Old Flame Brewing Co.
This photo is of the Greenbank post office and store, located in the Edward Phoenix House, taken prior to 1914. The building was demolished in 1979.

Anyone want a nap? This bed sure looks comfy.
βFun Fact: this is what is called a rope bed because instead of wooden or metal slate holding up the mattress, rope was used. We get the popular phrase βSleep Tightβ referring to sleeping on tight ropes. β

Upcoming online exhibit in April!
Mark Making is an exhibit that explores historic artists who have worked or lived in Scugog, and what marks they have left through their artwork. Featuring works from the museumβs collection, including Jimmie Frise, Gertrude Spurr-Cutts, Tom Thomson, and more. ποΈ
This is a photo of a man collecting ice with a large machine from Lake Scugog. Ice used to be harvested from lakes and then stored away, usually in barns, for use throughout the year. Now we simply have machines that make ice for us whenever we want. π§
