All three of the anti-direct democracy bills I mentioned here are now law in Arkansas. If youβre an Arkansan, your right to participate in the initiative petition process is weaker than ever. And Republicans are considering several more bills to make it even weaker.
They also both made the great point that, while Republicans enjoy control of the state government right now, that wonβt be the case forever. The pendulum will swing back eventually. How will they feel when the shoe is on the other foot? #arleg #arpx
SB209 would make it easier for the Arkansas Secretary of State to disqualify signatures (even valid ones) on initiative petitions. So far, the two people who have spoken against the bill in committee are conservative. This isnβt a partisan issue! Why wonβt our legislators listen?
Find your representative here: www.arkleg.state.ar.us and call, email, tag them on social media asking them to vote NO on SB 207, SB208, and SB211.
But it's not too late to ask your state representative to vote NO on these bills! Every Democrat in committee voted against these bills, but there a few Republicans also voted NO. This isn't a partisan issue. These are unpopular bills but representatives need to hear from voters to know that. #arleg
This process exists for the people of Arkansas and our ability to put issues before the voters is special. We take its existence for granted. Before long, it will be a process only extremely wealthy, well-connected interest groups can navigate.
πΉ SB211 (also back in House State Agencies committee Monday with an amendment) adds more legal red tape for canvassers and, in effect, makes it easier to potentially disqualify valid signatures.
πΉ SB208 (passed committee, will be back on Monday, Feb. 24 with amendment) requires canvassers to see photo ID before someone can sign, making it harder for many to exercise their RIGHT to sign. Remember, this isn't casting a vote, it's signing a petition to get an issue on the ballot.
πΉ SB207 (headed to the House floor for a vote next, not sure when) requires petition canvassers to warn signers that petition fraud is a criminal offense, which will intimidate people and make them scared to sign.
Arkansas lawmakers are considering a handful of bills that will make it harder (if not impossible) for regular, grassroots Arkansans to participate in direct democracy. Three billsβSB207, SB208, SB211βwould add MORE barriers to the already difficult citizen-led ballot initiative process. 𧡠#arpx
A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.
Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.

NIH funding supports the vast majority of all biomedical research in the United States. Virtually every advance in American medicine and biological science comes from NIH. This is a blow against American science.

Wildfires are actively raging in the second biggest city in the country, destroying homes and entire communities. Trump and Elon are using this moment to dunk on their political opponents. All they can think about is how this helps them gain more power. Itβs truly disgusting to watch.
Darkest timeline for sure.
