(this is a lot of story to write at 11pm when I shouldn't trust how to feel about my life. But still, SMRPG is that important thank you for coming to my campfire story)

Without Super Mario RPG, I'm not sure where I'd be. Probably still alive, because the other important game wouldn't need to save me. But probably not here. Probably not getting along with my mom. Probably not with the internet friends I have.

It definitely changed the course of my life.

Obviously through english classes, but also through playing more games in english. Getting involved in internet communities at a too young age. Watching english media.

And this ultimately bring me here. Along the way I took translation classes. Got fascinated by languages in general.

This was a formative experience on two fronts. On one hand, this was a way of bonding with my mom in the middle of a breakup. On the other hand I knew there was something good in that game I was missing because I wasn't speaking the language.

So I redoubled efforts in learning.

To make a long thread short, after an entire summer and more months later I reached Smithy. I was at max level, all extra points in health. Prepared myself by filling my inventory with **** ** **. Beat his ass using ONLY Fight. Died a lot. **** ** ** a lot. But prevailed.

Got stuck in places I don't remember and where no one sane would get stuck. Got really good at those rotating platforms in land's end. Learned the item that went **** ** ** would bring me back to life. Remember, I didn't know any kind of english and my mom was only available on weekends!

Every weekend I could actually progress through the game. Not easily, I still didn't know how to use skills, I pumped all my extra points into health because that was the only visible number, got stuck on those fucking time doors in marrymore for weeks, got stuck on that sunken ship puzzle...

My mother was the one person in my entire family who had some kind of higher education. Doesn't mean she was smart in every way, but she was smart in the one way that mattered: she was fluent in english. No one else was. I certainly wasn't.

So every weekend she became my personal translator.

Also I did not know what a RPG even was. So most of my playing time was bumping into monsters and only using normal abilities because I couldn't read the story, I couldn't read what items did, I couldn't read how to use skills even! This wasn't ideal, to say little.

Fortunately I had my mom.
