The next time that happened — I had just dedicated 30 hrs to a review for a guy who’d been on leave 7/12 semesters and done negligible service (virtually none in 11yrs), when another Ivy wrote to ask me to assess this guy’s “poachability” — I decided to quit 🤷♀️
I came to see this as an accurate metaphor :)
I sometimes think abt that time Yale asked me to do an expedited-promotion-to-full review for a guy who’d just gotten tenure, who’d been out on rsch leaves for 3yrs, had maybe taught 3 classes in the past 6yrs — and who was being poached by another Ivy. I realized: oh, you’re not hiring *colleagues*
In this era of Silicon Valley brainrot, I think the best way to save the humanities & liberal arts is just a really good acronym, so I propose to you:
SHWARMA PLLATE: sociology, history, writing, anthropology, rhetoric, media, art, philosophy, literature, languages, and technology & economics
they knew they could get away with it because they practiced all those times on the “narco-terrorist” boats, where they also killed the survivors, and nobody sent them to The Hague about it so they are running completely unchecked right now with full use of the arsenal. I do not know how this ends
Importantly they are planning to hire these people on 2 year contracts so what actually happened is they fired everyone so they could rehire them with worse working conditions and an easy revolving door with industry 🔭

For my entire teaching career I’ve incorporated lots of field trips + collaborative projects + xtrnl partnerships into my classes. I prob spend at least one day each week on logistics: transit plans, building access, guest Wi-Fi logins, document sharing permissions, etc. The invisible labor of tchg.
