City of Ottawa to buy downtown hotel for $45 million A report for the finance and corporate services committee recommends council approve the deal to purchase the eight-storey former long-term stay hotel at 377 O’Connor Street at Gladstone Avenue for $4...

It is great news that the city is buying the hotel at Gladstone + O’Connor to use as transitional housing for families — many of whom are currently holed up in awful motel rooms. These suites have full kitchens and the building is close to schools, the Y and transit.

New office conversion projects bringing nearly 130 affordable homes to downtown Calgary | CBC News The City of Calgary unveiled plans to add two more developments to its growing list of office conversion projects Monday. They will bring nearly 130 affordable housing units to the city’s downtown.

Calgary has one of the highest downtown vacancy rates in Canada. The city launched a non-market office conversion grant in response.

Victoria council wants power to regulate building emissions The motion will be debated at the Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities Conference in Victoria this spring.

The City of Victoria wants the province to ensure municipalities can regulate emissions from existing buildings. 53% of the City of Victoria’s emissions come from existing building stock. This motion supports local governments having the tools to cut emissions where they occur.
