Free history talk this Saturday (March 7), Noon, Title Wave bookstore, Anchorage! I'll be talking the petty jealousies of cities and how Fur Rondy got started. Plus other odd history. As always, show up or I'll run amok. Song is "Fur Rendezvous" (1982) by Brian K. Jones.

"Logic!" cried the dying frog. "There is no logic in this." "I know," said the scorpion, "it is my character." Of course, sometimes the scorpion scowls fiercely and denies being a scorpion. The scorpion has no compunctions about lying, not a part of its character.

Teenage me crying as the first TV show I watched weekly from start-to-finish comes to an end: "I should upgrade my bedroom."

May 30, 1918, Anchorage residents march in parade to cemetery for Decoration Day, an older name for Memorial Day. 1968 Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Memorial Day observation from May 30 to last Monday of May effective 1971. #alaskahistory #anchoragehistory #Alaska

1981 rejected Gunnar Birkerts design for Loussac Library in Anchorage. Typical for Birkerts, natural lighting is a primary feature, here aided by a mirrored lens at the building's summit. From March 1987 Architectural Record. #alaskahistory #anchoragehistory #alaska

Juneau highlights: pastries at the Rookery, the entire vibe of the Drip Drop Wondershop, Alaska Robotics, random stickers everywhere, constant snow for mood, and Pat Race as a tour guide.

The Golden Comet was the signature cocktail at Club 25, an Anchorage bar open 1948-1982 & pictured in 1956. Recipe: one part each lime juice, orange curacao, & vodka. Blend with ice until frothy. Rub rim of martini glass with an orange slice, which becomes a garnish. #alaska

For a while there, almost any warm drinkable was called a hot soda, from actual sodas served hot to tea to soup.

"Hot Alaska Toddy" recipe from the January 1909 issue of The Spatula magazine, one of my more gruesome finds. Like the Alaska Cocktail and Baked Alaska, the Hot Alaska Toddy did not seem to originate in Alaska, or the Klondike. #alaskahistory #alaska

From the Nutty Professor (1963): an Alaskan Polar Bear Heater. Mind you, this is the Alaskan version, not the regular Polar Bear Heater. It reminds me of an awful take on a Long Island Iced Tea. I might make one for a future article on "Alaska" cocktails. #alaskahistory #alaska

"Fairbanks '77" by Hard Luck Harry (aka Harry Hunison), which rather accurately if colorfully reflects the inescapable vice of pipeline-era Fairbanks. From the 1988 (second edition) of Alaska Barroom Ballads. #alaskahistory #alaska
