Calla taught me so much during the process of writing this novel, among them, to be still and listen. There were moments when I lost her voice completely—so many pauses, so many moments of reflection. The stillness this project required for sure made me a better writer.
Listen to the Girls follows Calla the summer after 7th grade as she tries to come to terms with the news that her favorite teacher has been accused of inappropriate behavior with female students, and as she learns to use her voice to uplift the other girls and tell her own story.

Let The Monster Out is available in paperback today! This is the book kids get most excited about when I do school visits, and it was nominated for a couple of readers’ choice awards here in Canada. But it seemed to fly under the radar in the US so I’m glad it’s getting a second life in paperback.
Excited that NOT AN EASY WIN is nominated for the Truman Readers Book Award, along with these awesome titles! Even more excited that students throughout the state of Missouri will get read Lawrence’s story 💜♟️
With this particular story, I’m resisting way too much!
I’ve started the next round of edits for my third MG novel. Lots to be done but I’m starting slow.
Today’s takeaway, I’ll have to stop protecting my main character and let her make the necessary mistakes.
