Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying. Something startled this Baltimore Oriole while he was trying to peacefully enjoy his breakfast. Ready to fly. Didn't fly. Stayed to eat more grape jelly. 😋
The female Northern Cardinal can be pretty variable buff, grayish, tan-ish, hints of red in her wings. The orange beak shows she's an adult. The juvenile Cardinals have a gray/black beak. Also it's probably way too early in the year to have juveniles. Here's a youngster. 🙂
Ran a #TenMinMerlin during a walk along the Illinois river this morning and heard/saw a grand assortment. Also saw gulls, ducks, and a large flock of soaring pelicans.

We walked a couple miles along the river this morning and heard/saw a great assortment. The Merlin app was workin' overtime! Heard 2 kinds of gulls, saw ducks flying, and watched a couple hundred pelicans doing their synchronized flying routine. 😀

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Corvidae, birds of the Corvid family. In central Illinois that'd only be American Crows and Blue Jays, both year-round residents. Here is an American Crow standing in the sun, probably planning some sort of mischief. 😆

I'm lucky to be under an hour away from The Nature Conservancy’s Emiquon Preserve in central Illinois, a model floodplain restoration project. It's one of our best regional birding/nature areas. It's a spring/fall migration stop for tens of thousands of Snow Geese.

We had two health appointments one after the other and a few blocks apart. So we walked from one to the other... in a heavy rain. Humans, 1/2 mile. 😁 Predicted temps in the mid 70s this afternoon, and maybe sunny, so there could be more walking before the day is done. 🙂

This morning in central Illinois the #TenMinMerlin caught a whole bunch of year-rounders. Most of the Juncos will head north pretty soon. Robins thin out in winter but don't disappear entirely. All the rest might be seen almost any time of year here.
