Sheila Heti is making me think that this world would be a much better place if we were all crushing hard on a cutie all the time instead of causing drama just to fill up the hours.
(From her short story in the most recent New Yorker)
If you’re looking for a sliver of hope these days (I am), look locally. After years of cruel and unproductive leadership, we finally have some compassionate and damn competent people steering the course of our city.
Went to a D2 city council meet/greet last night and was heartened to hear them ALL talk of the need for non-police interventions, better ped infrastructure, clean waterways, and community care for houseless neighbors. This new format for council really is bringing out the best in people. (So far)
I believe in the right to protest. I believe in a thoughtful diversity of tactics for having one’s voice heard. I believe in the need for conversation on the role of government and discussion of how we can change it for the better. But this ain’t it.
This cannot possibly be shared enough times. Thank you, Divine 🙏
they should shut down every social media site and force us all to get a life tbh
Much credit goes to @councilorepg.bsky.social’s facilitation. A 12-person body is a lot to wrangle — making sure everyone’s voices are heard is no small task and she’s damn good at it.
Shout out to Portland City Council for holding evening meetings so that residents can engage with gov while also having day jobs AND for holding mature, thoughtful, and oh-so-well informed discussions at them. Really loving this new council so far.
Approximately 1 kerjillion friends tipped me off that I NEEDED to go see this show and they were not wrong. I’d like to pass along that gift of a recommendation: You NEED to get offline and go see Emily Counts show at Oregon Contemporary.

Heartened to see @shannonsingleton.bsky.social supporting Portland Street Response & wanting to expand to the county as well.
“Different costs, different models, really different outcomes — and we need to have that conversation”
This is the nuance that we need.

New Council President @elanapirtle-guiney.bsky.social:
“Arresting people who live on the street does not improve our shelters, it does not create the services people need to get stable and become ready to find housing, and it does not create the jobs Portlanders need to get back on their feet.”
