Snowfall in the Cambrian Mountains.
Not like snow that falls on the sea, met with a saltwater kiss, an unwitnessed assimilation soon forgotten.
This snow will stay, harden beneath open skies in the cold caress of winterβs breast, covering the frozen scarting of hoofs and a river slowed by ice.
Yup in the middle of a gothic short story if I can get near my desk to finish it off then equally to re-engage with the novel. π€£
Have you been lined up for Creative Conversations yet, Fran?
WW created this in the β30s, so around the same period Muir undertook his journey. Maybe the overlap was an intentional linking of two different interpretations of a time of change?
βI am a chorus in search of a tragedy, a raker of middens in the industrial North.
βI am a genius in an obscure line of business. Try me a little.
βI may have something you can use.β

An angler out for the winter sea bass on the estuarine stretch of the Nevern. Fish of 12lb been caught! But I thought the summer was better? Rod long enough to keep you in the channel, stout enough to take a hit. A wee sand eel spinning on the end. More bliss than bass.
Lunch at Gordon Jacksonβs favourite spot in Tenerife next? Worth the hairy bus ride.
Lovely!
Looking at the cover blurb, I always smile at the tendency of Americanβs to qualify places with the country, just in case a resident of one of the 8 Edinburghβs (or 8 Aberdeens or surprisingly, 21 Glasgows) get confused.
Perfect place to be and well deserved. Fully expect to see you guest featuring on the bossβs CW course on the MLitt next year!
Hope you made the most of the authors pass! Great festival! Looking forward to reading #ABadBadPlace. So is it advance copies at the mo?
And crab applesβ¦the birdsβll be happy!
Mega year for sloes!
Really good article by @alexjclark.bsky.social in todayβs @guardianbooks.bsky.social on who writes and reads βnature writingβ β that lucrative echo chamber of often emotional narrative, lined with lovely woodcut covers. I like @herdyshepherd.bsky.socialβs take on it β less detached more real.
A fragment of Irish rainforest near Moycullen, Galway. These places are so rare, so deeply enchanting, yet still so undervalued.
What sort of nation cares so little about the natural side of its heritage?
Huge congratulations to @margaretmcdonald.bsky.social! And to all the shortlisted writers. And Big Up the librarians who work so hard to make the awards happen. πππ #ukkidlit #kidlituk
