When the edible hits and you're in a really old and really boring video game.

Like watching a bunch of people watch someone smash their hand with hammers and going "Yeah, that seems fun", at least to me.

... Then you get the hundreds of videos of people clicking the Blood of Heroes in the Plaguelands not knowing what it is and subsequently ending their run without consent.

In the teeth of being next to, in many respects, a smoother and far less frictional experience, many do prefer and pick the clunky one.

Some of it is nostalgia, sure. But people are still iterating on it. Seeing 'hardcore mode' transition from a mod to something officially supported was (con't)

I'm playing this in 2026 for some godforsaken reason. And it's made me think about older online games and now their popularity endured in spite of the hostile design elements.

Vanilla WoW vs its current iteration are entirely different games with the former having many "wut" design choices (con't)

It's interesting to read this in a time where I picked up FFXI. And I'm hilariously enjoying it BECAUSE of its obtuse weirdness.

I feel @aranai.bsky.social described it best by remarking how he wouldn't call the game *fun*, but he would call it *satisfying*.

Lately, I've been playing Final Fantasy XI's main story. It has its moments, but oh my god the engine is so jank that even those moments have things like AU Kairi KingdomHearts five seconds after saying "these edibles ain't shit".
