Aye the audible testing was cancelled late 60's after a police officer over in Longcroft pressed the local control button and an elderly Siren decided to disassemble itself at speed.
The most you would have seen was a lamp lit on one of the control boxes inside if there had been a silent test.

My interest was the Air Raid Sirens, on your beat
Police Boxes 4 (School), 6 (Grassmarket), 11 (Parkside St) had Sirens in 60's. (No 3 might have had one during ww2)
14 (Paliament Sq) had one on the roof (also had the Carrier Control point until it moved to Fettes).
I think no 4 siren moved 80's.

I hadn't appreciated it had gone down from 4 to 3.
5 divisions when the boxes were first introduced in 30's but E soon after became the "mounted" division without an area. It then temporarily went back up to 5 During WW2.
Was there also a box in Dumbiedykes?

I realise on rereading after I posted that the box I only knew as "near Simon's Square" is your box 9 Richmond Lane. I looked up the street names on the map but my brain didn't make the link.

Could 11 possibly have been Simon's Square?
Areas changed a bit but was on the corner of Richmond Lane/Gilmour Street.
Alternatively there was a box at the park where Parkside street meets St Leonard's street?

Edinburgh Police Box on Marchmont Crescent at the junction of Warrender Park Road.
The box is well presented but has a bit of a lean forward. Painted black with gold highlights and a blue roof complete with Siren mount.
It has a (retracted) cover and fold down table attached to its front.
It is currently operated as "Katero Food Bar" however they are due to move to "the Pitt" in Granton and as a result is advertised as "To Let or For Sale"

This #SirenSaturday we reach the final Insitu evidence of a Siren based on the 1960's "Carrier Planning" list. (There are a few not listed)
The #EdinburghPoliceBox on Marchmont Crescent (I forgot to record the Police area and number)
This was given Carrier planning number 254/59 in the 1960's.

So there is a story about the "top 10 cities at risk during nuclear war" circulating in various tabloids/etc. with my name attached to it, and I will say that a) I never have (nor would) make such a list at all, and b) I never said any of the quotes attributed to me in the article.

I don't think so but can't remember, I need to rewatch the video in the linked post.
The main entrance was inset and at right angles (so any blast hits a wall, not the door) and I believe had two gas tight doors to provide an airlock.

Built WW2 Reports of bomb damage would be sent here where police and arp controllers would plan/manage the deployment of Fire Brigade, Police, Rescue teams, ambulance/First aid response teams.

It is not the only building of its type it was one of 5 Air Raid Precaution (ARP) Report Centres built during WW2๐งต

Thank you,
I hadn't ventured onto the playing fields, only ever photographed that one from Eildon Street
Odd one out of the 5 built, not being a L shape.
I think Roseburn refers to theirs as the armoury as well which is even stranger given it outlived the others.

Plotted locations of Edinburgh Police Boxes based on the Drainage record Books from the Edinburgh Corporation.
This is not complete and representative only of a snapshot from around 1932.
There is at least 1 box at Roseburn which has two entries due to relocation.
DG44 160-170,
DG45 120-131,
DG46 131-138,
DG48 54-71,
DG49 160-167

The Trams trundling post really make the scene.

And now the full 1939 clip. It's startling seeing the contrast. My grandfather was posted not far from here at one point, so maybe he strolled through when it looked like this. Weird to think about.

A 'staged' B/W image of Edinburgh Corporation Transport Leyland Tian double deck bus 728, NSF 728, on a street in Leith on route 34 to Lochend. It appears to be a winters day - a man in a heavy coat stands in the roadway as the bus appears to approach. The roadway is wet and many type tracks can be seen. On the pavement is an newish 'Staybrite' stainless steel bus stop post with an ECT "Bus Stop" flag and portcullis number frame with routes 21 and 34 shown. On the right there are trees, a woman with a shopping back walks away, and there are tenement blocks in the background.
A manky day in Leith, c.1960. Not sure if this is a potential passenger attempting to stop #Edinburgh Corporation Transport 728, one of several hundred Leylands bought to replace trams, on the 34 to Lochend - or get run over by it. A fine 'Staybrite" ECT bus stop mind you.

Some fascinating stuff. There are the wartime Nurseries as well, there is one still on Fords road behind Saughton Park which is so austere I thought it was an ARP Decontamination building when I first walked past it.
