If you wonder why so many people get refused asylum and have to appeal, one reason is that the Home Office do weaselly things like this with the evidence about risks on return, with the apparent intention of encouraging its staff to refuse entirely meritorious claims
The infuriating thing is that executive summaries are often unjustified by the evidence IN the report being summarised π«
Yep, The Times is going with 'The murder of Renee Nicole Good is the fault of immigrants'.
To fellow pupils struggling to get into the zone of cramming for the ethics exam next week. Try singing βletβs get ethicalβ to the tune of Olivia Newton-John, Physical.
A reminder to always read beyond the executive summary of Home Office CPINs, co-authored by me!
Wait, isnβt it Asian men who are the threat to women and girls in the UK?
is it only asylum seekers our Labour Prime Minister would object to living next to or would the sentiment apply to black and brown people in general? if merely the former, would he like to explain how he knows people he sees, say, in the street, actually are asylum seekers and not citizens?
Thank you LALY team and the legal aid community for an inspiring and uplifting evening!

Sending solidarity and love to my friends, colleagues, followers and everyone else who is or ever has been a migrant, on this deeply disturbing and shocking day in British politics
Good luck to everyone expecting pupillage news today! Itβs also worth saying that everyone I speak to about the application process, including many of the most impressive barristers and pupils I know, did not get pupillage their first time applying. Trust the process!

π A really interesting article on @freemovement.bsky.social about the recently published Country Policy and Information Note on #Iran: social media, surveillance and sur place activities. A worthwhile read for lawyers and caseworkers β‘οΈ freemovement.org.uk/new-iran-cou...
A very important reminder! The government & right wing press love to claim people legitimately exercising their rights are βabusing the systemβ when it suits. Like care workers who brought dependents, as permitted by the rules, were suddenly abusing the system when that fit the govβs narrative.
who will write the Equality Impact Assessment for this proposal - Houdini?
Ahh, the government trying to plug any and all safe routes for individuals at risk of serious harm to stay in the UK. It really disgusts me that they will still simultaneously pedal a narrative about wanting to βsmash the gangsβ to protect vulnerable people.
Like Danny, Iβm often consumed by the question of class. It definitely contributes to my imposter syndrome. I recommend listening if you also feel in this βclass limboβ - not quite fitting in at work, but at home your family insist that youβve gone all posh! podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/t...

From Guardian website: According to the figures, allowing asylum seekers to work after six months would save the country Β£4.4bn in government expenditure, grow the economy by Β£1bn, increase tax revenue by Β£880m, reduce the mental health impacts of worklessness and destitution on asylum seekers, promote better integration, and reduce dependence on taxpayer support.
A Home Office spokesperson said: βWhile the wellbeing of those in the asylum system is important, we remain determined to continue cracking down on anyone working illegally in the UK, and we certainly have no intention of creating a fast-track process so that people who come to the UK outside the established work visa rules are simply allowed to ignore them.β
If you want a pristine example of how absolutely everything in this country is distorted by the perceived need to perform for right wing voters, look no further than the question of permission to work for asylum seekers
Thanks to Katherine for this very thorough guide!
First week of pupillage down! Dare I say that I actually enjoyed it?
I still canβt believe this is cake and not flowers. How lucky am I to have had such lovely colleagues!?
