The picture shows the effects of health shocks on different sub-groups of the population. Severe health shocks have particularly large effects on employment among workers older than 50, low-educated, and blue-collar workers.
Heterogeneity analyses reveal large differences across different groups of the population: Older workers, as well as low educated and blue-collar workers are affected particularly hard. As a result, health shocks may exacerbate existing labor market inequalities.
The picture shows one of the main results of the paper: Moderate health shocks only have minor and transitory effects on employment, while severe health shocks persistently reduce employment by around 7.5 percentage points.
In the paper, we propose a novel method to detect and disentangle moderate and severe health shocks based on a data-driven classification of sickness absences and hospitalizations. We find that severe health shocks have persistent effects on employment and labor earnings.
