Will Poland have nuclear weapons?

After his speech, Tusk was asked in the parliamentary corridor whether his words meant that we would strive to ensure that Poland had its own nuclear weapons.

- There is a French proposal. We are analyzing it very carefully because we want to know in detail what it means in terms of control over these weapons. The British have a problem today, they cannot use their nuclear weapons without the participation of the Americans - Tusk stated.

- Maybe it's not a big problem, but spending billions, because in the case of France it's probably 14 billion a year just for maintenance, these are very serious expenses. So if we decide to do it, it would be worth being sure that we decide when we can use it - explained the prime minister.

The Prime Minister recalled that Ukraine had gotten rid of its own nuclear weapons and "became a victim of an attack". - Today it is clear that we would be safer if we had our own nuclear arsenal. There is no doubt about that - Tusk argued.

- Either way, the road to this would be long, and there would have to be a consensus on this matter. This must give us a sense of security - he explained.

- We will not rush, we must use our technological and scientific capabilities, in cooperation with others, we will use this European money to start thinking very modernly. This means that we do not buy everything that moves, we only try to make a wise selection and we try to buy what is the most modern - said the Prime Minister. He added that "no option is closed".

Tusk did not announce a Polish nuclear weapons program, but he didn't rule it out either.

Tusk seems to be opening a national debate in Poland on acquiring nuclear weapons. Aldo suggested he might be in favor.

Google Translate caveats apply.

Very much enjoyed the research for this @twqgw.bsky.social special issue on the nuclear impact of emerging technologies. I explore how they are impacting the Israel-Iran nuclear relationship and the implications for regional security.
