This BBC headline should say ‘fined for SEXUAL ASSAULT’, however they know exactly what they’re doing here…
Softening what happened into “kissing player” downplays ASSAULT. It invites debate, doubt, and minimisation.
Words matter. Call it what it is.

Jaysley Beck’s tragic death is yet another reminder that rape culture thrives in institutions built on power imbalances. The system failed her. And until holistic preventative education exists and is accessible to all, across society, it will keep failing others. #JaysleyBeck #EndRapeCulture

In any situation there will be many factors at play, including gender, class, sexuality, and diasporic context that inform practice. We must consider these and avoid blaming specific cultures as a whole.💙

We must take an intersectional approach to dissecting sexual violence cases.
Intersectionality is a way to understand how multiple forms of oppression interact to create distinct outcomes.

Scapegoating certain groups distracts people from the real issues, reducing the focus on underfunding and the growth of polarising rhetoric amongst young people. Sexual violence and rape culture exists within every culture, we must not ignore this.

If we play into the perception that grooming only happens within certain ethnic groups, we risk obscuring the systemic nature of sexual violence, whilst at the same time fuelling anti-Muslim racism.

According to a study by Dr Ella Cockbain at UCL, there is: no credible evidence for a far-right stereotype that has spread widely in the media. Instead, the facts show that
85% of ‘group-based’ child abusers were white in the first three quarters of 2024.

Due in part to terminology used by mainstream media, the term “grooming gang” immediately connotes to Pakistani-heritage Muslim men abusing white girls, but this is not based in evidence. Home Office researchers have found that group-based offenders are most commonly White.
