To avoid being over dramatic, I don’t think it will cost me much to not use Chat GPT for sermon prep and running a parish! But it’s still a serious matter.

A thread regarding TryTank and Generative AI in the liturgical life of the Episcopal Church. 🕯️

The Episcopal Church is known to be progressive and kind, even permissive. But sometimes we have to say no. I will say no to Generative AI, I don't care what it costs me. I am a priest, I have taken vows in fear and trembling, and I will do my best to uphold them. 🕯️

To preach well is to do this boldly, humbly, in the name of God. Generative AI is not alive, it does not know God, it does not know human beings, it has taken no vows of faithfulness and pastoral responsibility. It has absolutely no place in the holy task of preaching. 🕯️

To preach is to take on a holy task that should make you shudder. It is opening up the Scriptures to proclaim God here and now, Christ and Christ crucified, Christ resurrected, for you and for me. It is to proclaim a message of life. 🕯️

Preaching, according to Rev. Levenstrong's writings, is to be "human centered". Not sure how that works with using Generative AI to write a sermon to begin with, but regardless, I would wager, with two millennia of church history, that preaching is actually Christ centered. 🕯️

My other serious problem with TryTank's decision and with Rev. Levenstrong's Generative AI soapbox is Rev. Levenstrong's longstanding push for clergy and lay leaders to use Generative AI for preaching, liturgy, and outreach.
Anathema. Seriously. 🕯️

3. Generative AI is a mirage of efficiency and omniscience, made and promoted by individuals who do not understand life and human wholeness--or who just don't care.

I will not use a resource that will further degrade the people and places I come from. 🕯️

2. Generative AI is destructive of:
a. the environment
b. so-called low skill jobs that are the backbone of the kinds of communities i grew up in
c. human powers of cognition and creativity 🕯️

1. Generative AI is plagiaristic of:
a. artists' and writers' creative property
b. the deeply human work of thinking, writing, and re-writing with thought to relationship and audience.

It is a thief. 🕯️

I have deep concerns over the use of Generative AI in our church life. In fact, I am deeply against it. Here's why:

The Episcopal Church's innovation lab, TryTank, has announced the Rev. Peter Levenstrong as its first Senior Fellow. According to their instagram post: "Peter will be responsible for looking specifically for experiments that the church can conduct with regards to artificial intelligence." 🕯️
