Despite their relatively small footprints, nearshore habitats are critical for coastal jobs, cultures, and resilience. They are also some of the most vulnerable. Focusing conservation closer to shore will bring benefits for coastal communities, but also its own set of political and social challenges
Less than 1% of the US population lives in Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific territories, yet these islands are home to 99% of the marine protected areas in the country. This is a big gap, but also a big opportunity to make ocean conservation more effective and equitable (2/5)
