This is my favourite thing in further maths A Level - teaching hyperbolic functions starting with an area definition:

Under appreciated joke βββ
It's hard to describe (and probably doesn't hold up to too much scrutiny!) but the idea that the sine function relates a distance (on a straight line) to a distance (on a curved line) feels more direct. Angles are fractions of turns and feel further removed from lengths.

π Thank you Science Studio for sponsoring #MEIConf26!
This year theyβve funded teacher places, helping more educators access this 2-day event and bring new ideas back to the classroom.

I like arcsin as it feels very useful for me to define the inverse function in terms of lengths ... it's now made me wonder whether arsinh is giving a "length" in hyperbolic space but my hyperbolic geometry isn't good enough for me work this out!

Enjoyed using @desmos.com to make this geometric distribution sampler for use in lower sixth #ALevelMaths #MathsToday.
Recursion very handy for defining the inverse cumulative distribution function!

Been meaning to get to this one for a while.
There's so many niche mathematical notation quirks that come up and appear differently in different places, sometimes it's hard to tell what the intended notation is meant to be!

I re-read this again recently and enjoyed it even more the second time! This always seems to be the way with Ursula Le Guin - when I go back to her books I always find more in them than I appreciate on the first read.
It's irritating how the iPlayer Olympics coverage puts massive spoilers on the thumbnails for their highlight reels. I'd quite like not to know who won a race before I watch it
This is really annoying me too. It's unnecessary and has taken a lot of the enjoyment out of watching the highlights.

It's bad enough that it's not a quadrilateral but it doesn't even have 3 equal length sides!
Is it possible to construct a quadrilateral with exactly 3 (not 4) equal sides and exactly 3 equal angles?
If so, give an example.
If not, why not?
No - unfortunately not. It's a DfE-funded programme for state schools in England.

But probability is a model, so saying that p=0.5 is a statement about a model.
I don't have a problem with "accepting" H_0 either. H_0 is usually a statement that a situation can be modelled with a particular distribution. It's fine to "accept" the model, given the absence of evidence to the contrary.
It's difficult to make a comparison as for many students Further Maths will be one of 4 A levels, so dropping it won't have as much impact on progression to university as dropping from 3 to 2. It would be interesting to compare it to other students who drop from 4 to 3 A levels.
