Hurricane Melissa Literally Made the Earth Shake Hundreds of Miles Away Seismometers picked up the ferocious winds and waves of Hurricane Melissa, showing how the tools can be used to better understand storms today and those from the past

NEW: Hurricane Melissa was such a monstrous tempest that it was literally shaking the Earth as far away as Florida, where seismometers picked up its stormquakes.

Hereโ€™s how seismometers can also shine a light on hurricanes long gone.

Meet Prestosuchus chiniquensis. It lived in whatโ€™s now Brazil some 210 million years ago. Although it was a large animal with big claws & a huge head with sharp-toothed jaws, it wasn't a dinosaurโ€”it's actually a close relative of crocodylomorphs.

In 2023, a erm.... controversial paper tried to rename Prestosuchus to Huenesuchus based on an egregious misapplication of the ICZN. My rebuttal of this is finally out, open access in @revbraspaleontol.bsky.social sbpbrasil.org/publications...
