Why bats matter - About Bats - Bat Conservation Trust Bats matter across the UK and around the world. Bat species play a vital role in ecosystems, from agricultural land to tropical forests. They pollinate ...

Bats provide critical ecosystem services. #Bats πŸ¦‡ prevent crop damage and can help reduced insecticide use, three examples:

USA cotton farmers benefit by $3.7-53 billion per year

Italian apple orchards benefit by €551/ha

Rice farmers in Europe benefit by €56/ha

Lots of great new OA πŸ¦‡ research πŸ“„ published recently that provide valuable insights into different aspects of bat responses to natural and man-made elements of the #environment. Whilst these may not seem particularly "exciting" they provide crucial evidence to aid bat conservation.

A ringed Natterer’s bat in hibernation

A ringed Natterer’s bat in hibernation

Massive influx of Natterer’s bats at valley level marks the official start of hibernation season (last week they were still swarming). And the cherry on top was the return of Z0266, a bat ringed as an adult in 2005. That makes four 21+ year old πŸ¦‡ still turning up ( @johnaltringham.bsky.social )
