To mark VE day, I am posting an old folder of anti-fascist posters from the Spanish Civil War.

I originally started collecting these to try and choose an image for my book cover, and kept going because they're objectively awesome. Lost many in the last laptop migration, but the best remain...

Our new issue (22.1) is out! And it’s the first issue to feature our brand new, fully redesigned layout.
The full-color cover features art work by heretofore unknown 1930s labor artist Phillip Tipperman.

Classic poster β€˜Les milicies us necessiten!’ (β€˜The militias need you!’). 3 flags (Catalan, Anarchist, Communist) are flying in the autumn of 1936 calling for anti-fascist unity. Artist Cristobal Arteche based woman on Marlene Dietrich, encouraging / shaming men to join up.

At the Phillips Museum in DC is a terrific exhibit of William Gropper’s antifascist cartoons from the 1930s and 1940s. He was a visual artist blacklisted in the 1950s.

So if you’re looking to watch some bad acting by war criminals in some really awkward and bizarre low-budget films about dogs, these are the videos for you!

It’s funny how bad these are, but it’s also pretty infuriating. While the Bush administration was killing a million Iraqis, dismantling our system of civil liberties, letting hundreds die in New Orleans, etc, they were wasting time with this corny bullshit.

It's kind of impressive the insane amount of ghouls from the Bush admin they roped into these videos, including: Alberto Gonzales, Karl Rove, Andy Card, Henry Paulson, 3 different press secretaries, the secretaries of Commerce, Agriculture, Education, Interior, and HUD, and the whole Bush family.

A Red White and Blue Christmas, 2008 YouTube video by US National Archives

The last one β€œA Red White and Blue Christmas, 2008,” Barney is decorating the White House for Christmas β€œAmerica-themed” but it's also about the Summer Olympics? There’s a weird dream sequence in which Barney competes in the Olympics and Michael Phelps shows up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg11...

Holiday in the National Parks, 2007 YouTube video by US National Archives

β€œHoliday in the National Parks, 2007” is A weird convoluted plot about Barney and Miss Beazley becoming park rangers. The magic was definitely spent by this time. But it is notable for featuring cameos from country singer Alan Jackson and UK PM Tony Blair.

Then was β€œWhere in the White House is Miss Beazley?, 2004.” Barney is sad he got turned down for all major cabinet positions but then gets the job of taking care of Bush’s new dog Miss Beazley. But then he loses her. But then it turns out she hasn’t even arrived yet? www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gi_...

This first real entry is β€œBarney Reloaded, 2003.” This is where they start to have plots and get wacky with it. Barney is supposed to be helping to decorate the white house but he’s fucking around instead. But after a pep talk from Bush he gets it together. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f_-...

Barney & Miss Beazley Barney and Miss Beazley were the much beloved Scottish Terriers of President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush.

A few years back I discovered that the George W. Bush administration made a series of Christmas videos featuring the Bush Family’s two Scottish Terriers. And they are weird as hell.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think"Mackey" refers to John Mackey, a cartoonist who produced this comic for Ken magazine in 1938, which, unlike the preceding work, looks pretty good and is kind of funny. Guess he just wasn't bringing his A game to FIGHT.

17.12.2024 19:06 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The artist "Hoff" was Syd Hoff (1912-2004), who went on to illustrate popular syndicated comic strips and children's books. He also contributed to Communist publications in the 30s under the name A. Redfield
Out of all the art in FIGHT, imo Hoff's had the best combo of style and being sort of funny.

Unlike "Strength Through Joy," which was pretty good, in 1936 FIGHT ran a short-lived anti-war comic called β€œGeneral D’Sorder” by Mackey, which was not funny and kind of looked like shit.
