Here is the "effective payline" for each institute, estimated (by Claude) as the percentile where one can expect 80% probability of funding from a logistic regression fit. The effective payline has gone from a historic ~12% to 6% in 2025.

Magnesium depletion by Candida albicans unleashes two unusual modes of colistin resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa with different fitness costs Bacterial resistance to the vital last-resort antibiotic colistin is an increasing challenge. This study shows that magnesium sequestration by C. albicans enables P. aeruginosa to evolve much higher l...

Our story on the evolution of colistin resistance is just out on @plosbiology.org (journals.plos.org/plosbiology/... Evolution doesn’t happen in isolation. We show that competing fungi can rewire the evolutionary trajectory of colistin resistance in P. aeruginosa. Great teamwork with the Ernst lab

Given that clonal biofilms of single bacterial species rapidly diversify into niche specialists, how do biofilms of multiple species evolve?

🧡 New preprint! Our 4-lab team evolved Streptococcus pneumoniae in antibiotic-treated mice of varying immune states and discovered something surprising: bacteria rarely evolved resistance. Instead, they found a different way to survive β€” by rewiring RNA turnover.

Some Sad News It is with great sadness and collective heavy hearts that we share news of Professor David Harpp’s passing. Dave’s vision of reaching out beyond the gates of McGill to demystify science for the public...

Sad to hear about Dr. Harpp's passing. He was a great scientific communicator and I really enjoyed his World of Chemistry lectures as an undergrad at @mcgill.ca. Rest in peace Dr. Harpp.

Can someone pinpoint if there is a Pseudomonas putida (e.g. KT2442) database where we can find out which lab has certain deletion mutants and/or report strains?

Coming from the B.subtilis field with #SubtiWiki containing all these info, it is difficult to find all available mutants in the papers

Priority effects inhibit the repeated evolution of phototrophy - npj Complexity npj Complexity - Priority effects inhibit the repeated evolution of phototrophy

New paper out! Here's a puzzle: phototrophy, the ability to use light for energy, is one of life's great innovations. It evolved early and transformed the biosphere. But it evolved 2x. Why not just once, why not more? Our work suggests the answer is priority effects.
