Screenshot of Worldcon 2025 panel description reads as follows: Strong Woman Lead # LGBTQIA+ Culture/DEl Room 420-422, 9-10 a.m. Have you ever walked into a bookshop and asked for books with strong women leads? Perhaps you've requested that love not be a major plot point? Has the staff excitedly passed you half a dozen books that, though good, have a bit of a repeating theme? Here we ask the question: Why do authors/bookshops assume the only way to have a strong woman lead is to make them gay with a woman love interest and prevent men characters from rising over the background? Isn't it possible to have a book with strong women and men characters in it and not have them fall in love?
Iβm not attending Worldcon this year & everything seems to be a mess but this is so mind-bendingly bad on so many levels that I think itβs worth unpacking while Iβm in the no-space of airports
Just finished reading @maddiesmartinez.bsky.social's THE MAIDEN AND HER MONSTER. I enjoyed learning more about Jewish mysticism through her well-crafted fantastical novel. The sapphic romance too was *chef's kiss.* π€

A green floral background with the title THE MAIDEN AND HER MONSTER and underneath that in smaller text MADDIE MARTINEZ. In the center obscured by a couple pale green leaves is a publishers marketplace announcement that says: Maddie Martinez's THE MAIDEN AND HER MONSTER, a sapphic fantasy pitched as reimagining the Jewish myth of golem that follows a young woman forced to venture into a cursed forest to capture the monster hunting the girls of her village; instead; she discovers a disgraced golem ready to confess, but only if she agrees to help fulfill an ancient promise first β a bargain that unravels a much more dangerous threat to her people, and forces her to face growing feelings for the very creature she was taught to fear, to Stephanie Stein at Tor and Grace Barber at Tor UK in a significant deal in a preempt by Victoria Marini at High Line Lit. On the bottom is a bush of pale green leaves decorating the space with the Tor Books logo splitting the words Fall 2025.

my brain is too small for this
created an entire world for golem. now you're telling me I have to create an entire other world for my next book?!
it's the only right thing to do honestly!
Artwork from golem wip. Swirling dark forest with two characters searching their way through. First character in front is my character Malka, a white woman who is scared and holding a candle up, looking it the left at someone off screen. Sheβs wearing traditional medieval clothing from Eastern Europe, including a pinnofore with an intricate top. In the back is Nimrah, my golem character, holding a sword with swirling long black hair
thinking about my girls!!! βοΈ
my sapphic reimagining of the jewish myth of golem ft jewish folklore, a cursed forest, and a sapphic monster romance, is such a perfect fall/winter read and it's my dream that one day people will be able to cozy up and read it as the weather turns! <3

Book trope tree with a fake book cover in the center. Surrounding it on a green floral background are the tropes: jewish mythology, critique and appreciation of religion, stories within stories, historically influenced, monster love interest, sapphic slow burn romance, and forestry horror
